Shabby chic emerged in 1980s Britain and was popularised by designer Rachel Ashwell, who built a brand around the look in the late 1980s and 1990s. It celebrates the charm of age and imperfection: furniture is painted in chalky whites and pastels, then distressed so the wood shows through at edges and corners, suggesting layers of old paint worn by time.
