Dotwork

Also known as Stippling, Pointillism tattooing

A tattoo technique that builds shading and tone entirely from thousands of individual black dots, creating soft gradients and luminous geometric patterns.

About the style

Dotwork is a tattooing method in which form, tone, and shading are created not with solid fill or smooth whip-shading but by stippling countless tiny dots. By varying dot size and density, the artist produces smooth gradients, soft shadows, and an almost engraved, stippled quality reminiscent of old etchings. The technique pairs naturally with geometric, mandala, and ornamental work, where its grainy gradients give depth to symmetrical line constructions. Dotwork demands patience and precision, since each point is placed by hand to control the transition from light to dark. Recognized by its pointillist texture and luminous, slightly soft tonal shifts, it became a signature of the modern blackwork and sacred-geometry movements. Pioneers such as Xed LeHead at London's Into You studio helped define its meditative, mathematical aesthetic.

  1. Tone is created by spacing dots farther apart in light areas and packing them densely in shadows.

  2. Soft, luminous shadows emerge from layered points rather than solid black, giving a grainy depth.

  3. Each dot is placed by hand, so the technique rewards patience and exacting control of size and spacing.

  4. Dotwork frequently fills geometric and mandala forms, fusing pointillist tone with crisp symmetry.
