About the style
Frutiger Aero is a retroactively named aesthetic spanning roughly 2004–2013, capturing the visual mood of Windows Vista and 7, early-2010s consumer tech, and Web 2.0 advertising. It pairs glossy skeuomorphic surfaces—glass, gloss, gel buttons, reflections—with imagery of clean nature: water droplets, bubbles, tropical fish, blue skies, and vivid green grass, expressing an optimistic fusion of technology and the natural world. The clean humanist typeface Frutiger (and look-alikes like Myriad) gave the era its calm, corporate-friendly voice, lending the movement its retronym. Auras of light, lens flares, and shiny highlights complete the look. Largely forgotten after flat design took over around 2013, Frutiger Aero has enjoyed a strong nostalgic revival among those who grew up with it, celebrated for its hopeful, clean-tech futurism.
