Hygge (pronounced 'hoo-ga') names a Danish concept of cosy contentment that crossed into interior design as a global trend around 2016. As a decorating style it layers the clean lines of Scandinavian modernism with an emphasis on tactile warmth and atmosphere. Rooms favour a muted, neutral palette of soft greys, creams, and pale wood, warmed by chunky knit blankets, sheepskins, wool cushions, and natural-fibre rugs. Lighting is deliberately low and diffuse — candles, lanterns, and warm-toned lamps replace bright overheads to create a glowing, restful feel. Furniture stays simple and unfussy, often light oak or birch, while greenery, ceramics, and well-worn books add lived-in comfort.
