About the style
Modern farmhouse is the dominant American interior style of the 2010s, propelled into the mainstream by Chip and Joanna Gaines's HGTV show 'Fixer Upper' (premiered 2013) and the accompanying Magnolia retail empire. It updates the cosy, rural farmhouse vernacular with a cleaner, more contemporary sensibility: horizontal shiplap panelling, exposed or reclaimed timber beams, and barn-door hardware meet crisp white walls, neutral greige palettes, and graphic black accents on window frames, fixtures, and lighting. Apron-front 'farmhouse' sinks, Shaker cabinetry, and natural-wood and linen furnishings keep the look warm and tactile while staying simple and uncluttered. The result is approachable, photogenic, and family-friendly — rustic enough to feel homely, clean enough to feel current. Its enormous reach across new-build housing, renovations, and retail made it the defining suburban look of the decade, though by the 2020s some declared it over-saturated.
