About the style

Bohemian interiors trace back to the unconventional, anti-bourgeois living of 19th-century artists and the countercultural, well-travelled hippie aesthetic of the 1960s and 70s, but the look was revived and reshaped into 'boho chic' in the 2000s and surged on social media through the 2010s. It is defined by layering and abundance: globally sourced textiles, Moroccan and kilim rugs, macramé, rattan, mismatched vintage furniture, and a jungle of houseplants are combined with collected, well-travelled objects. Warm, earthy, and jewel-toned palettes — terracotta, ochre, rust, and deep greens — mix freely with pattern and texture, with little concern for matching. The look is personal, layered, and lived-in, signalling creativity, travel, and a relaxed rejection of formal, minimal interiors. At its peak it overlapped heavily with houseplant culture and handmade-craft revivals.

  1. Overlapping kilim and Moroccan rugs build a rich, well-travelled floor of mixed pattern and color.

  2. Handmade macramé, tapestries, and woven wall art add craft texture and a 70s revival warmth.

  3. Trailing and potted plants in clusters bring living greenery and the indoor-jungle vibe central to the look.

  4. Mismatched cane, rattan, and collected vintage pieces signal a relaxed, individual, non-matching approach.
