About the style
Minion was designed by Robert Slimbach for Adobe in 1990, an original old-style serif inspired by the late-Renaissance romans of the sixteenth century but drawn for the precision of digital typesetting. Its name, an old printers' term for a small type size, signals its purpose: clean, unobtrusive, supremely legible body text. Slimbach gave it a moderate stroke contrast, gently bracketed serifs, an angled humanist stress, and balanced proportions that avoid both the quirks of historical revivals and the coldness of rationalist serifs. Reissued in 1992 as a multiple-master family and later as the OpenType Minion Pro — bundled with Adobe software and used across the company's own documentation — it became one of the most widely deployed professional text typefaces of the era, with extensive optical sizes, small caps, ligatures, and a vast multilingual character set.

Serifs join the stems on a quiet, even bracket — refined rather than expressive, in keeping with Minion's neutral, workmanlike character.
The lowercase o thins on a diagonal axis, the oblique old-style stress that places Minion in the Renaissance humanist tradition.
The g uses the traditional two-counter book construction, an upper bowl and lower loop joined by a neat link — a signal of its old-style pedigree.
Set as running text Minion reads as a calm, even grey with no idiosyncrasies, exactly the invisible quality publishers want in a body face.
